Finally Know What It Feels Like When You Hear NHL Goalies Say The Puck Looked As Big As A Beach Ball

This is what happens when you find the FLOW STATE, when it feels like your body is on autopilot, like it knows what to do without thinking, you can just play the game.  Preparation and confidence are the foundation to finding your flow, here's how to earn it.

How Stud Goalies Gain Momentum During The Season Without Burning Out... Even when their team already does off-ice training.

What You GET From Your TEAM Off-Ice Training

What You WON'T Get From Your TEAM Training

Compound strength movements: Knee Dominant, sometimes Hip Dominant, Push, Pull.  This is great, keeping strength is important, but sets of 12 will not get you that.
Some sort of "Core" which is usually just ab work that doesn't translate onto the ice and adds load to your already tired, stiff back - lookin' at you Russian Twists.
You'll throw or slam a Medicine Ball somewhere in there, that's cool, nothing wrong with that.
High volume plyometrics (like more than 6 reps per set) that don't make you any more explosive and add wear and tear to your knees, hips and ankles.
And there will probably be circuits, don't forget the circuits.  Those are great for making you tired.

You will not get frontal plane strength and power to help with your post-to-post speedEverything will be saggital plane because that is what skaters need.
You will not get functional core training which is how you learn to use your torso as the key connector between your upper and lower half, this is how goalies can lead with their head and hands and have their hips snap right around to follow.
You will not get bottom up strength and power drills that are essential if you want to be explosive from your butterfly.
Other than your team warm up and cool down, you will not be given a daily, progressive, goalie specific mobility plan to follow throughout the season to keep your hips, knees, ankles and back feeling great in the crease, while reducing your risk of injury.

None of this is your Head Coach's or Team Trainer's fault.

Your Head Coach's job is to coach the team, not be a strength and conditioning coach.  Even if they took Phys. Ed in university 18 years ago, they don't know what to do with a team.  They are just trying to remember what they used to do when they played or share something they saw on Instagram that looked pretty good.  They are doing the best they can.

Even if your team has a trainer, it's not easy for them to work with an entire team.  I know, I did it for years.  Even when I was the strength coach for the men's Hockey team at Western University some guys were in great shape and others, not so much.  You almost have to design a program to match the lowest common denominator.  And when you have 20 guys in the gym at once and few guys who are rehabbing injuries, there isn't much time for 'goalie specific' stuff.

So what can you do about it?
WARNING: TRUTH BOMB ABOUT TO GO OFF đź’Ł

â‘  Start taking some ownership for your development.  Instead of complaining to your parents, your fellow goalies or even me about how your team workouts don't have anything for goalies, do something.

② Believe in yourself!  Believe at your core that you have so much more to give to the position, that you can be so much better than you are now.  You're just getting started!

③ Finally make sure you know that you are working on the right things, you don't need to do more of what doesn't work.

I'll give you the solution right below, but first nice to meet you, I'm Maria Mountain...

MSc (Kinesiology), NSCA CSCS, CSEP Certified Exercise Physiologist

As a Strength & Conditioning professional since 1994, I’ve had the privilege of helping athletes achieve their dreams, including training Olympic gold medalists in figure skating, soccer, and decathlon. My science-based approach is rooted in a deep understanding of physiology, biomechanics, and injury prevention, which allows me to create training programs that deliver results on the ice. Whether you’re aiming for a wider butterfly flare, faster reflexes, or better stamina, my proven methods are designed to unlock your full potential as a goalie.

I’ve also been where you are—an athlete pushing hard, sometimes too hard, and making mistakes along the way. Early in my career, I overtrained and missed key opportunities to improve because I wasn’t focusing on the right things. That’s why I’m passionate about guiding goalies through a smarter, more effective training process that prevents injuries, maximizes performance, and helps you stand out from the competition.

Maria's clients include goalies and coaches from...

I created the Varsity Goalie Academy In-Season program specifically for High School to College goalies like you who don't have time and opportunities to waste.

DOES ANY OF THIS DESCRIBE YOU?

You believe you have untapped potential.

You are ready to step on the ice with confidence and be a leader your team can count on.  You work hard, but the progress comes so slow.

Inconsistency has limited your opportunities.

When you step on the ice you aren't sure how things will go, sometimes you are unbeatable, but other times you cough up 5 and you never know which version of you will show up.

You feel you've been unfairly passed over.

You've been invited to mini-camps and development camps, but you haven't been able to make that big step up yet.

You have missed practice or games due to tweaks or injury

You definitely don't want to miss time, it feels awful sitting in the stands watching someone else take your net.  So you try to rush back or play through it, but then it's hard for you to trust your body.

Just a little more speed would be huge.

You know where you need to be, but you can't get there square and set before the shot, so you find yourself reaching for pucks.

You just need a little more reach to make those highlight saves.

Other goalies move like Vasilevskiy out there making huge saves that get the crowd on its feet even on rebound saves.  You are having pucks squeeze through your 5-hole or past your narrow butterfly and in the net.

The Varsity Goalie Academy In-Season program is designed to help you gain momentum as the season wears on, so you are hitting your peak come play-off time.

âťť Overall, I feel I have better control, especially in those awkward positions goalies can find themselves in. Maria does a great job of providing committed goalies the off-ice training they need to take their game to the next level.
Jaxson Stauber, NHL Prospect
âťť  I was kind of blindly trying to figure out strength and mobility for goalies. I’d do the classic hour long stretch after workouts and at night, only to wake up the next morning feeling more sore and more tight. If there was one thing I could tell my younger self it would be to seek out Maria sooner.
Jake Keilly, European Pro (Retd)
❝ Since training with Maria, both my personal and team goalie coaches commented on my much improved speed in net which was an aspect of my game that lacked previously. I am able to play with more confidence knowing I can beat plays more effectively than before!”
Ethan Haider,  NHL Prospect
âťť I didn't expect the training to have such an impact on my Speed and explosiveness even in outer range movements
Corbin Sanderman, WHL Drafted
âťť After my first summer everyone noticed a difference in the way I moved and how quick I was. I have even more confidence and feel great!
PA, High School Goalie
âťť I have always struggled with sore, stiff hips with limited lower body mobility and flexibility. I started with just your hip mobility program a long time ago and it was a huge help.
TM, High School Goalie
